The Appraisal Standard of IELTS

Standar Penilaian IELTS 

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an international standardised test of English language proficiency. Nowdays, this test is more well known than the other tests (TOEFL = Test of English as a Foreign Language  and TOIEC = Test of English for International Communication) for applaying an overseas scholarships.  

So many people want to get the best score of IELTS. Actually, what is the appraisal standard of IELTS?

The appraisal Standard of IELTS base on four Points (Global English, Pare):

1. Test Achievment (TA)---The Higest Score = Two

Penilaian didasarkan pada kesesuain ide jawaban dengan pertanyaan yang diajukan (Unity). Unity adalah ukuran dalam suatu kesatuan ide (apakah ide pokok sudah sesuai belum dengan isi). Untuk dapat menyatukan ide jawaban dengan pertanyaan, dapat menggunakan mind maping yang jelas. Apabila terdapat satu kalimat yang tidak sesuai dengan kalimat lainnya, maka dapat mengurangi nilai Unity.

Eg:

I am a Thai girl living in the U.S., thare are many adjustments that I must make. First of all, I must get used to a new kind of food. I am learning to eat a lot of hamburgers because they are not expensive and they are easy to buy. The people are different and I am learning to meet new foreign friends. For example, two of my new friends are from Pakistan. Pakistan is also an interesting country to visit. The weather requires another kind of adjustment. Some days, it is hot just as in my country, but on other days, it is cold and this is very strange for me. I came to the U.S to study and I enjoy my classes and my teacher. I am adjusting to the U.S. in many ways, but it is not a problem for me because I like to know about different places and people. 

From this example, there are two sentences that is not appropriate with the paragraph:

a. Pakistan is also an interesting country to visit.

b. I came to the U.S to study and I enjoy my classes and my teacher.

We should avoid these sentences to get high score

2. Coherence and Cohesion (CC)---The Higest Score = Two

Coherence: 

a. Arrangement (susunan): It should systematic arrangement (harus tersusun secara berurutan dan tidak bolak-balik dalam menjelaskan suatu ide).

b. Identity: what is the character of your writing (Narrative = base on time, Descriptive = base on description, or Expository = base on reason).

Cohesion: This is to avoid the boring paragraph. There are five points of Cohesion:

a. Linking word (like a conjunction in a paragraph). The using of Linking word should be varied in order that the reader is not bored. Eg:  first, second, next, afterwards, in short, finally,etc. 

b. Personal Pronoun. Eg: He, she, it, they, etc. 

c. Demonstrative Pronoun. Eg: That, this, those, these.

d. Definite Article. Eg: The.

e. Synonyms. Eg: Ema goes to market, then Ema buys the clothes there. 

The name of Ema can be changed with other synonyms, eg: She, that girl, the girl, the student, the naughty girl, etc.

3. Lexical Resource (LR)---The Highest Score = Three

It is connected with diction (pemilihan kata) and spelling (eg: can not (wrong), cannot (true)).

4. Gramatical Range and Accuracy (GA)---The Higest Score = Three

This is about the using of true grammar. It is for appraising your knowledge about grammar.

The highest score of IELTS is ten points. But, if you can get six or seven, your writing is good.

The Question of IELTS:

As the internet spreads all over the world, some people believe it will eradicate the existence of newspaper. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

My answer:

The internet spreading will eradicate the existence of newspaper. Nowdays, the accesibility of internet is better than before. Most of electronic tools include with internet access. They are handphone, and computer. Everybody almost has handphone; consequently, they obtain new news easily with their handphone everywhere. Next, the content of internet is more complete than the content of newspaper. We can get all kinds of information in the internet; nevertheless, a newspaper just gives us certain information that is newspaper's purpose. Most characteristics of newspaper are about politic, healthy, economic, cultural, and social information. In short, the development of internet will replace the the newspaper's fame.
